Ice Cream Cone Cakes! Well, My Attempt. NaBloWriMo Day 6

My oldest is home for October break! (hubby had to drive 4 hours each way to get him while I was at the shop trying to sell off the rest of Blue Rage)

I was so excited to make him these Ice Cream Cone Cakes for his belated birthday celebration, but in chocolate, of course.

Experimenting with things I see online had been successful thus far, these seemed so fun! Even though my son is 19.

My bright idea was to also get sugar cones instead of the regular cones. (I like them better. Selfish me.)

About 4 minutes into cooking, I realized I had made a mistake.
Not only were the cones all tipping, they were getting rather brown.
All I could think of was Nuke-Town cupcakes. They reminded me of the look of trees after a nuclear bomb, all blown the same direction, all burnt. This joke was completely lost on my kids. They only could think of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Not to waste the effort, we frosted and sprinkled the cakes. Chocolate is chocolate, right?

But sadly, the frosting and sprinkles did not save the Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes. They were burnt, the cakes were a little dry, and the dang sprinkles that got in the fold of the cone fell all over the place when we ate them.

I thought I might try it again, using the regular cones as the recipe called for, but I really don't know if I will. It is kind of strange eating an ice cream cone with no ice cream! I was expecting ice cream, and the cake just seemed out of place.

I say leave the cake as cake, and add ice cream to the cones. Well, it is good to add ice cream to cake too, but that is besides the point.
This is one online idea that I will leave to the other Mommies to have fun with.

  1. I, too, have been trying Pinterest recipes and others as posted on FB--mostly with successful results; but I so appreciate your sharing the cupcake cone fiasco! Glad you took pictures, too! If you can get past the frustration, epic fails in the kitchen usually end up being pretty good stories ;)

  2. Am I glad you posted this. All we normally see are beautiful pictures of beautiful stuff, and when your stuff turns out "real", you wonder where you went wrong.

  3. I think they look kind of cool! I agree with you cake in a cone would be weird, I would rather have ice cream.

  4. Huh, it looks like an interesting idea! I appreciate the "realness" of your post! But yeah, it would be a little weird not to have icecream. Cute idea though.. in a strange way for the tastebuds. :)

  5. Glad to hear I am not the only one who thinks cake with ice cream cones is weird. I know I am not the only one who can't replicate the perfect pictures of food, but not sure I want to pin my own mistakes, lol. Someday I could do my own post of 'fails' tho. lol.
