Walking on Wednesday - Trees Are Beautiful Even If Dangerous

I love trees.
I love the shade, the leaves, all the different bark there is on all the different trees.
They house birds, bugs, sometimes snakes, and encourage all kinds of natural wildlife activity.
But sometimes, they are dangerous.
This tree provided nice shade in our backyard,
but one windy rain filled day it decided
it had had enough, and just keeled over.
It decided without taking into consideration
our electric line or cable line.
There was no going back, it had let go of this earth.
But it left an interesting void.
If you can get past the danger, you can discover
all kinds of beauty under a tree as well.
Yes, there are roots and bugs, and sometimes you can find things from settlements long gone.
This tree had what is usually of most interest to us,
beautiful rocks!
One of the rocks that was found under the tree
was this piece of quartz.
It makes a beautiful display for the
 Apache Tear Pendant
(soon to be listed!)
As the day wore on, the tree's weight
was no match for the few roots that were left.
And it gradually fell onto the lines,
threatening our way of life by
threatening our electricity and internet,
on a Saturday no less.

We did manage to call a professional and
he delicately cut and removed this beautiful tree.
It was a Black Walnut tree, the inside so beautiful we had to keep the main trunk.
Why?
I will let you know as soon as I do.
Hubby has great plans.

Next on the agenda is this fine tree,
that is a part of the majestic trees
that line our long and winding
beautiful path of a driveway.
Something, and we can't quite figure out what,
broke this tree.
Broke it near the bottom, and broke it good.
The strong trees on the other side,
thus far, seem to be holding it up.
But still, it is precariously leans over our driveway,
and every day it gets a little weaker at the base,
and droops a little further.
We drive really fast under it,
and, when not in the car,
run really fast under it.

We will have to call a professional in, again,
to delicately cut this one down and remove it.
This one is Pine, so hubby says he will let this one go.

I expect that living in the mountains,
in a yard that is so full of trees,
this will be a regular occurrence.

Some will remain beautiful, standing tall and proud.
Others will become dangerously beautiful,
showing us a new world inside them
and under their roots.

  1. Nice, Raige - sometimes wonder how long a tree has lived, what it has seen and sheltered, and why it suddenly keels over.....great pics!

  3. The pine could have been damaged by insects. The pines in my area have been falling over, but here I know the cause is insects, termites after the Hurricane of 2004. Google damage to Pines, or Pines NC Falling over, or whatever phrase you can think of. Always sad to lose a tree, but neat that you found treasures.

  4. Great post! I love trees, they offer so much that we take for granted. Have you ever read; The Giving Tree by Shell Silverstein? It is a lovely story and your post brought it back to me.

  5. thank you all - I love finding beauty in nature at all times.
Judy, never thought about bugs...will have to look closer at where it broke.
Shona, I have not read The Giving Tree, but I will add that to my 'must read' list.

<3 to all of you and your kind words.

  7. That's quite unusual -- not many of us get to look at the underside of a tree!
