Walking on Wednesday - Not listening to your body and heeding your mind

It has been so difficult to get back into the swing of things this New Year. I know it will be a good one if I could just fight the urge to go back to bed!

It has been tough being that is has been SO cold. Bed was SO warm. I had decided that when the kids went back to school, well I too would get back to work and get things done again! However, I felt like LadyJ (our dog) looks in this picture:
"Huh? I don't think so! " LadyJ says.
Yesterday, the decided day of 'getting back to it', turned out to be a snow day for the kids, and thus we all went back to bed after the school called to say it was closed for that day. This set into motion a nice lazy day for Raige. I mean - in pajamas until early afternoon, and getting dressed involved sweatpants and sweatshirt. I didn't even cook dinner! It was a get your own dinner, which started with candy appetizers.

You can imagine this didn't help the "go get 'em" plan. Let me tell you, I wanted to crawl back in bed after the kids went to school today! I mean, it was a longing I haven't felt in a long time, because all the other times I just gave in and crawled back into bed. The road to accomplishing anything seemed LONG. But today I persisted.
The long driveway I have to overcome to go for my walk.
I resisted my body telling me 'it's nice and warm under those covers - go get warm!' I resisted the yawns, the drowsy feelings.

I changed into my walking clothes, grabbed the camera (because the SUN is out today!!), got the leash and dog, we bundled up, and off we went. The temperature said it was 19 degrees here in Weaverville. Dang I must be crazy - 19 degrees is COLD!!

My body all the while saying: 'go back to bed, nice warm bed. doze off for a while, you need your rest.'
LadyJ in her nice plaid jacket already exploring the scents of the world.
My mind saying: 'get up, go for walk, stay active, work and accomplish the things you need to do today.'

Normally my body wins this argument. But today my mind won. I am so glad it did.
View from my walk.
I took in the sun, the cold air, and the beautiful views and walked my regular half hour walk. And now I do not have my body calling me back to bed. I have my mind and body together saying 'It is a beautiful day. Now get busy!'

It was not easy to get to this point. I am sure you have had to struggle with similar opposing viewpoints at times. All I can say is - the uncomfortable hurdle you have to cross seems so much smaller once you are on the other side of it.
So worth the effort!
Keep that in mind when you are facing that hurdle.

The view from the other side is so worth the effort!

  1. wonderful view!! And I feel with you the heater hear is fighting to get the house warm. It was 15F when I got the kids ready for School! Aehm we live in the South... oh well.
Glad you got over your hump and wish you lots of accomplishments for today!

  2. Wow - I'd LOVE to have your driveway! My own driveway is about 20 yards long out to a highway - yours is so much more inspiring!
I went walking yesterday with my dog - partly just to say I'd done it. Walking outside is not something you do in January in Minnesota! But there's no snow, and it was above freezing, so out we went. :)

  5. I know exactly how you felt. After taking the week off between Christmas and New Years, it has been hard to get into the swing of things.

I forced myself to go to the gym on Monday and that really helped. I would love taking walks outside if I had your views. Thanks for the reminder to get out there and start your day.
