Music Monday! She Blinded Me With Science

Image
I heard this on the radio the other day, and it made me want to bring back Music Mondays. I love when old songs pop up, songs from the great days of this new channel - MTV! That day, this song made me think of my son, the "science-y" one. (a term coined by my artfully creative daughter, the Art major, who was explaining her difficulty in a required science class, Psychology 101 - "yeah, the science-y stuff I dont' get). He was explaining to me what he was wanting to study in graduate school - Molecular Biology and Bio Technology. Of course, he went in to more detail, all of which I listened to, probably looking like a lost child trying to keep up. I am fiercly proud of my son, who is about to graduate with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology, for his brilliant mind and passion for "science-y stuff" (including cellular biolgy and DNA sequencing). I just can't wrap my head around most of it. But I will always listen, with the glass-eyed ...

Friday Find ~ Views from the Road

Image
Technically, these finds are from yesterday, but since we got home so late, it is today's Friday Find. Usually interstate driving isn't very interesting. Just miles and miles of road, each interstate looking much like another you have most certainly been on for hours and hours. I find my eyes get tired of looking at the land, which starts to look like everywhere else you have been. So, I happened to notice the sky. The sky, so big, so vast.  I think I also noticed the sky more because everything around us was flat . When you live in the North Carolina mountains, and have to drive East to the other side of the state, you notice how flat the rest of the state is. I am so used to the mountains, when not in them, everything is so...well...flat. And I noticed that over this flat land there is a huge sky, full of beautiful colors and clouds. Especially when the sun is setting, and the whole word is this brilliant cool blue dusk. It could have been the 8 hours on the r...

Walking on Wednesday ~ When the Heck did THAT Happen?

Image
'Take time to stop and smell the flowers' they say.  Yes, that sounds like a good idea, but every time I stop and take a minute, I say to myself "When the heck did THAT happen?!?" Things are moving so fast these days, events that happen often take me by surprise. For example, my oldest is now in his second week of college! Yes, well into classes and settled in. I know we drove him there, unloaded all his things, said our goodbyes and drove home without him. (all in one day too, 5 1/2 hour drive each way. No wonder it is all a blur.)   See me hanging on tight.... when did he get so tall??? I look at the pictures and think 'When the heck did my little Cuddle Bear become a man?' It seems like it happened so fast, the last 18 years..... Then today, I nearly fell over when my  youngest  walked in the kitchen like this:   Sir, yes Sir! He is in JROTC, and uniforms are the dress each Wednesday. But when did he become such a handsome young man? (...

Music Monday! Drive

Image
The perfect driving song, we listened to this on our drive to Greenville, NC. Last week was my son's college orientation, and we loaded up the car, and drove. It was the first road trip we have taken since we moved here, going on 2 years ago. It is a quite pleasant 5 1/2 hour drive, and after only 2 years in the mountains, we found it interesting how flat that side of the state is. (I was also surprised at the comfort I felt once we returned to the mountains.)  A beautiful campus, East Carolina University is in the small city of Greenville, NC , with the city population of only around 84,000. Compared to Asheville, the kids said it is flat and were surprised there were no tall buildings.  Pitt County Court House Greenville City Hall The highest building downtown is three stories tall. In contrast to that, the campus has dorms 10 stories tall. We all liked the campus though. Gorgeous architecture.  Cotton Hall, one of the oldest reside...
