Weekend Musings ~ Herbs and Hot Peppers

Image
I have been so lazy this weekend. Some would say that is what weekends are for, but after two days of lazing about - I took Friday off to get a good long weekend in with Monday being a holiday - this morning I was feeling like I HAD to do something. I decided I just had to get a little bit busy in the kitchen. Hot pepper vinegar ingredients, vinegar not pictured. I got to cutting up some carrots and onions for our long planned hot pepper vinegar. We have been planning it for weeks. We have what are supposed to be ghost peppers   - my MIL planted and then left with us to tend while she is away. They have been getting bigger and turning from green, to orange, to a deep hot red color. Watching the hot peppers get redder and redder We have watched as day by day the get redder and redder, somewhat anxiously. Ghost peppers are supposed to be the 2nd hottest peppers on earth. The  deep burning red hot color perhaps an indication that these things are dangerously hot. Th...

In the Garden by One Clay Bead

Image
Oh, does this get me right in the mood to plant something!   'In the Garden' , is a beautiful treasury by OneClayBead OneCLayBead is a talented creator of functional stoneware pottery dinnerware, serving, and home decor pieces, plus Indie designer original jewelry using at least one clay bead. Here are some of OneClayBead's own garden treasures: Pea Pod Ornament and Raven Consultation sculpture bowl All these things get me to thinking, although it may be tough to believe for some right now, spring is right around the corner. Time for planting and new growth. I feel the need to plant flowers, lots of colorful flowers. What is the first thing you want to plant this spring?

Music Monday! Wicked Game

The day after I posted my sad little herb garden , and lamented that the basil was struggling and that I wanted this herb to grow the most, I went outside to check on the pots.  What I found so upset me -extreme vandalism by what could only be the squirrels.  Not only did they dig up half of the basil (and you remember how few were sprouting - only 7 then, and now just 3!), they nearly destroyed all of the cilantro!   All I could do is gasp and yell "Those damn squirrels!!"  And then this song popped in my head - they play such wicked games.   I couldn't find a song called 'those damn squirrels' (tho there are a ton of videos catching squirrels in the act! search that on you tube and you will be surprised!). We were going to get pumkins this week and carve, but after searching youtube and watching this video, and thinking about the wicked squirrels in our yard, I am reconsidering....

My sad little potted herb garden....

I was so excited to try my hand at growing some basil, dill, sage, cilantro, and chives once we moved. I didn't plant anything all summer because I knew we were moving. Once we got settled, I bought some dirt and planted the seeds I had been holding onto since we sold our house way back last year. I started with 4 pots, 2 kinds of basil, cilantro, dill, chives, and sage. My high expectations of pots overflowing with lush, green sprouts were met with this. A sad little potted herb garden. I had 2 different kinds of Basil, so they both went into the big pot.  My daughter was helping, so she filled one side with one kind of basil, and filled the other side with the second kind of basil.  What grew?  Seven.  A measly seven. You can hardly see them in this pot above.  I thought the few that came up were kaput, especially since a squirrel planted something in the pot. But last week I saw some new leaves trying to grow.  So there is hope th...
