Well, it seems the best laid plans of mice and men are in play here. We are weathering a storm just 2 days days before a planned trip to a wonderful mountain retreat for a wedding. A wedding we CANNOT MISS - it is our daughters wedding!
Despite my huge effort to travel BEFORE the storm (see above - daughter's wedding I CANNOT MISS), an argument with the poor airline customer service rep, and hours on the phone, we are stuck here with a storm, now named IAN, I had just finally convinced the airline to waive the change fees and fare difference exorbitant price, as at the time there were no warnings yet, it was all for nothings as just then we found out the last seat was taken. No more empty seats before the storm was due to arrive.
At some point, between closing hurricane shutters and filling water vessels, hubby shared this gem of a song with me. Hurricane Gilbert hit Jamaica in 1988. I don't mean clipped, I mean went across the entire country from one end to the other. It is no wonder they wrote a song about this storm.
We had a good chuckle or 2 enjoying this tune.
Unno si mi dish, unno si mi dish
Anybody unno si mi satellite d-d-dish
Unno si mi dish, unno si mi dish
Anybody unno si mi satellite dish
Come!
Dish tek off like flying saucer
Mi roof migrate without a visa
Bedroom full up a water
Mi in a di dark nuh light nuh on yah
And through mi nuh have no generator
Mi seh
One cold beer cost ten dollar
Mi fish and mi meat spoil in di freezer
A pure bully beef full up mi structure
Come!
So our freezer is set, hopefully will stay cool if the power goes out. These containers are all filled with waters. We will be eating pasta and canned beans for the next few days. (Thankfully we have a gas stove).
You may wonder where all the freezer food is...well our fridge stopped fridging last weekend, meaning it was nearly a sauna in there before it got fixed. So we trekked all of our food to Grams house, and this picture was taken before we went to get it back. Now our pasta will have some meatballs.
I had just recently complained that hubby saves every.last.damn.yogurt.container. Every one. But, I do have to say they make good ice containers. I think we have enough for a bit. Plus, added bonus that when or if they start melting, we will have more drinking water. The little things learned from previous hurricane preps. Too bad this prepping gave me flashbacks from our experiences with that other terrible storm that started with and "I", But we won't dwell on previous traumas here. We will just focus on what we learned, and look forward to our trip next week. (hopefully the flight won't be cancelled)
So now, before the power goes out, and perhaps the water too, I will post this early so you can enjoy either today or Monday for regularly scheduled Music Mondays.
Fingers crossed that we will be able to travel right after Ian passes. See y'all on the flip side!
Raige Creations turns 1 year old next week. To celebrate, Raige is doing her FIRST GIVEAWAY! I can't believe a year has passed, and how far Raige has come. Certainly, the handmade community and its supporters had something to do with Raige not giving up, and Raige's customers are just the best! So to honor all you wonderful people, Raige is happy to give. What to give, you ask? 3 New Toekini's TOEKINIS OF COURSE Toekinis have, by far, generated the most buzz at Raige Creations. It seems fitting to celebrate with one of them. Every time I have Toekini's on my brain, I think "Life is good today" and this song from Music Monday gets stuck in my head.with these lyrics: "I've got my toes in the water, ass in the sand, not a worry in the world , a cold beer in my hand. Life is good today, life is good today." But life is good today, even if it is not yet summer here, and to celebrate - the giveaway will be your CHOICE of TOEK...
It's not the kind of money tree you are thinking. I wish it was. But it is not. It is technically a Pachira . The name supposedly comes from a story of it's origin. A poor man prayed for money, and then found this "odd" plant. He took it home as an omen, and made money from selling plants grown from it's seeds. I bought it at a grocery store when we first moved back to the states, in 2004 . We had just moved in to our own house, after being displaced from Hurricane Ivan , and our new place needed some green. This was the biggest plant, for the least amount of money , at the grocery store. It said it was ' foolproof ' , and that is the right plant for me ! I thought the name was an omen too, hoping it would bring good fortune, meaning a little money . It decorated our living room in New York for almost 6 years ! During that time, about 2 years after I bought it, I tried to root it from clippings just for fun. It worked , and I grew another money ...
Opportunities arise when you least expect them. And sometimes they involve things you never thought you would try. The key is to let go of your limits, to step outside the box. Sometimes it is finding your way through a coffee bag. An opportunity presented itself at the beginning of this month that Raige never thought of. A coffee grinder had some coffee bags they wanted to see turned in to other things. They didn't want to just sell the bags, they wanted to give them to someone to inspire them to create, and then they wanted to showcase those creations in their coffee shop. Coffee bags. Burlap. This is a medium Raige had not explored before. The question to Raige was: "So, are you a seamstress?" Raige: "What??? Um, NO. I would certainly not call myself a seamstress. But I CAN sew a bit." Thank goodness Laura was as willing to take that leap of faith as Raige was. She gave me a bag, and thus began the journey through a coffee bag. As with any ...
