It seems I am always writing in my head, but can't seem to get it written on the computer until I have a long weekend. A long weekend meant for relaxing. This long weekend sneaked up on me. Work has been so incredibly busy for the last month, someone asked me what I was doing for the long weekend and I had no idea what they were talking about. But suddenly I looked forward to a nice, slow, long coffee mornings, weekend. What a few weeks it has been! I won't bore you with work, no. Instead, I will share how wonderful hubby has been through all this. This week he was the one that brought a smile to my face one morning, after his foray at the bulk store, by putting this little guy in the cupboard. GOOD MORNING MR SQUIRREL! I was spending a Saturday on the porch, hanging with hubby, and just passing the time drinking sparkling water with lime in it - a treat I have been giving myself these days and I love it. He was lamenting lack of materials to make the art that he wants to make, and I said 'What about using what the ocean giveth?' The ocean does giveth. It is constantly churning and mixing and depositing things on the shores from unknown places. Sadly, lately, it is a lot of garbage, but don't get me started with the garbage in the oceans. I watched this movie, A Plastic Ocean , and it scared me so much I couldn't watch the whole thing. It is really disturbing how much crap is in our waters. I hope and pray a solution will be found, or a few . But I digress. We do find things on the beach that we don't consider garbage, and we lovingly bring it home to keep, eventually to use in other ways if we can figure out a way to do so. We find pieces of old pipe. Take this as literal, as in actually digging in the dirt and sand. The song relates to, as says Gabriel, "During this period I discovered the most unbelievable phenomena within myself, characteristics which I value for myself, but also characteristics with which I would rather not be confronted, like unlimited rage, or merciless hatred." But no such rage or hatred was involved in this digging. Only curiosity and awe at the finds. This led to research, a digging of sorts, for information on practices long changed and nearly lost. The site was next door to a cemetery, and after the earth and sand was greatly moved for a new development, these things were near the surface! Very interesting finds, and the mind does want the stories that go along with such things. Thankfully, hubby is a pro researcher, having the interest and curiosity to search and search until every possible thing is found out, every possible theory, scenario, etc. At times, it is tough to keep...

Handblown glass has always intrigued me, the process being one that looks incredibly difficult to me. Not to mention the heat and danger associated with this art form. Even calling it an artform can be a cause for debate, because of it's functional capabilities and scientific knowledge that is necessary to make even the simplest and most functional pieces. But creativity has a major role in it as well and that cannot be discredited in the final piece.  Without going into too much history, debate, or critiques, I want to share some of the very beautiful creations my daughter got the chance to make as part of her senior project needed for graduation this upcoming year.  The snake (in the front above is a zig zag of glass with a curious head)  is what they start with, in the torch class, to get a hang of working with glass. Only one week into the kids' summer vacation, and I had to get up at 6:30am today.  Why?  ~Science~ Not psychology though.  My youngest was invited to a science camp at the local community college, AB Tech . They call it STEM Camp - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Have I mentioned how smart my youngest is? Well, he is smart enough to be asked to attend (this was invitation only), and smart enough to want to go - on his summer vacation no less. Sparkling Blue Starfish Toekini's So this week, we will be up early, which is good for me since I seem to get more done when I am up that early. Got 2 sets of Toekini's made before anyone else got up - something that seldom happens during any school vacation and particularly summer vacation.  Speaking of summer, this new set of Toekini's is perfect for the beginning of summer. Sugar. Baby. Well what other song could I do after a weekend of mosaic butterflies? Sexy butterflies?  That may be stretching it a bit...but this little ditty just popped in my head every time I talked about 'my' butterflies.   Hot Mamma Butterfly Here they are, unfinished ~ just need some grout, and some antennae.
