Music Monday! She Blinded Me With Science

Image
I heard this on the radio the other day, and it made me want to bring back Music Mondays. I love when old songs pop up, songs from the great days of this new channel - MTV! That day, this song made me think of my son, the "science-y" one. (a term coined by my artfully creative daughter, the Art major, who was explaining her difficulty in a required science class, Psychology 101 - "yeah, the science-y stuff I dont' get). He was explaining to me what he was wanting to study in graduate school - Molecular Biology and Bio Technology. Of course, he went in to more detail, all of which I listened to, probably looking like a lost child trying to keep up. I am fiercly proud of my son, who is about to graduate with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology, for his brilliant mind and passion for "science-y stuff" (including cellular biolgy and DNA sequencing). I just can't wrap my head around most of it. But I will always listen, with the glass-eyed ...

Music Monday! Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Image
Sitting here on this chilly night, with snow on the ground from a 'mini' snowstorm that hit us today (so I had to go get son from school 2 1/2 hours early).  This is before the 'big storm' we are anticipating tomorrow through Thursday. We are passing the time watching the Olympics, feeling the chill more looking at the snow and ice, and keeping an eye on the scrolling school closings across the bottom of the screen. As of now, they haven't closed school. But son is anxiously awaiting the news ' School Closed Tuesday .' But the uncertainty is frustrating. Click here if you are having trouble viewing video. Will he stay or will he go? We will probably get a call at 6:13 am (the usual time the automated calling system gets to our number).  So I will be up anyways. But he may get to sleep in.  photo courtesy of volcanic Maybe I will get to go back to bed...we will see.....in the meantime we can at least enjoy The Clash . This indecision...

Early Morning TEASE, Then Ultimate Disappointment!

Image
source My alarm just went off, (for the first time...I am a snooze button addict)   and I was glad that I could snuggle back in bed for 10 more minutes until it went off again. Just as I crawled back under the covers, the phone rang. Usually, a phone ringing at this time of morning (6:14 am) means only one thing - SCHOOL DELAY OR NO SCHOOL! I ran to the phone, somewhat irritated but somewhat happy with the thought of getting more sleep. Too late, missed the call.  Sitting anxiously on the couch in my PJ's, (which was just a tank top...brrrrr!!!) I waited for the voicemail to finish recording the recorded message and dialed excitedly to hear the good news. I hear this: Good morning. Although there are patches of lingering snow and ice throughout the county this morning, for the most part roads are okay. The worst conditions are in the Enka and Erwin District, so ONLY ENKA AND ERWIN schools will be on a 2-hour delay today, Thursday January 16, with no buses on ...

Music Monday! Crimson and Clover, Over and Over!

Image
As I try to get back into a normal schedule, I am really loving this song and this long version of it. It is a groovy way to start the week. Hopefully a nice and normal week. With school starting, the oldest now off at college, the shop duties taking up most of my waking hours, it is hard to feel consistency these days. This week, I am hoping to really get back to normal even if it is a new normal. I am ready for the comfort of repetition and steady schedule rather than the chaos of jam packed days in ten different directions. Crimson and Clover, over and over should set the tone. This song was written in an effort to change the band's directio n, and it experimented with sounds and effects . Another fitting theme for this week. Embracing a new direction at t he shop , and finding a schedule that will fit some aspects of the old schedule I was comfortable with.  Happy Monday and here's to new beginnings and old ways.

Music Monday! School's Out

Image
What better way to celebrate than with  Alice Cooper and The Muppets ? Here in Western North Carolina, the kids are out of school for the summer and this household couldn't be happier. This means no more getting up at 6am, no more driving kids to school when they miss the bus, no more picking up from after school activities, no more homework, no more signing permission slips. At least for a couple months. So while the house sleeps, I am up enjoying a peaceful cup of coffee planning the day. I am also wondering why I got up at 7:30 am.........but hey - that is sleeping in for me. Happy Monday and Happy Summer Vacation.

Walking on Wednesday - Bittersweet Back to School

Image
Tomorrow is the  first day of school  for my kids. Bittersweet . School buses ready and waiting for the first day. Bittersweet, you ask? Bittersweet is actually a color, a variation of orange, so fits into the coming of fall, and in 1949, "bittersweet" was made into a Crayola color , so actually quite fitting for back to school. But yes , back to school is bittersweet in the adjective sense of the word; producing or expressing a mixture of pain and pleasure . The kids say they don't want to go back to school, they have enjoyed their summer of carefree days, sleeping in, no homework, no projects or grades to worry about. The lonely swing my son and I put up. But in a way, they want to go back. Though they won't admit it , they like the structure of days with purpose, and of course they want to re-connect with their friends, maybe make some new ones. For me, it is bittersweet too. I have   enjoyed the summer with them so much. Spending time doing sm...

Music Monday! Free Ride

Image
I spent the other evening on the computer in the living room with the boys next to me playing video games.  The oldest asked me to play some music because he had Marky Mark 's Good vibrations stuck in his head.  (poor thing!) He said he would rather hear anything besides that....sooo This was the song he requested! Wha? I couldn't believe, first of all, that he knew this song at all, and second, he wanted to hear it and sang along ! The mountain is high, the valley is low And you're confused on which way to go So I've come here to give you a hand And lead you into the promised land So come on and take a free ride He was telling ME about Edgar Winter !  I was 2 years old when this song hit #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but I do remember hearing it on that AM radio always playing in the kitchen when I was growing up. And I am pretty sure this song came blaring out of my brother's room regularly in the late 1970's and early 1980's.  Actually, it...
