Walking on Wednesdays - Walking Up To A Snake

the Old Indian
Once upon a time
a woman was picking up firewood.
She came upon a poisonous snake
frozen in the snow.
She took the snake home
and nursed it back to health.
One day the snake bit her on the cheek.
As she lay dying
she asked the snake,
"Why have you done this to me?"
And the snake answered,
"Look, bitch,
you knew I was a snake."

One thing we were afraid of when we moved here
to North Carolina was the snakes.
There are poisonous snakes here,
like Copperheads!

And lo and behold, within the first few weeks we were here, this big old black snake slithered on the patio.

We remembered that quote from Natural Born Killers...

Not knowing what is was,
hubby 'took care of it'
with a shovel

Afterwards, we looked it up and found,
it was not a poisonous snake after all.
It was a Black Rat Snake.

One that helped by
eating rats, mice, and also birds and bird eggs.
We were sorry to have killed that one.

But as we discovered this morning
he was not the only one.
Our very own Black Rat Snake, on my clothesline.
I walked right up on this one.
He was in the tree right next to the clothesline.

They move pretty slow
and this one seemed to be wanting shelter
from the strong winds that have been blowing.

He slithered down the tree,
and right into that pipe that is our clothesline.
is this too close ??
We will let this one stay around.
But never get so close
as to let it bite us
on the cheek.

Music Monday! Easter Monday...so... Sex and Candy....

This day after Easter....
we all have CANDY on our minds,
if not the other....

This was Marcy Playground's one hit,
although the album this song was on is pretty good.

As Wikipedia says:
Marcy Playground is quiet and minimalist in tone. Wozniak's songs run in many different styles: some are modern folk music; many have undertones reminiscent of children's songs; the blurred sound of psychedelia makes appearances; and then there are the songs with a clear rock sound.

So on Easter Monday this year,
maybe the CANDY from yesterday
will have a partner -

Walking on Wednesdays - Walking Down Memory Lane

Let's Take a Walk Down Memory Lane
the art show we went to
This past week has been full of memories for me.  Starting with our family going to an art show opening last Friday.  It had been years since we have attended a function like this. I hate to say how many years. It was a big deal for us, especially since in our former lives, we put on art shows like this on a regular basis when we owned an art gallery.

So I had to dig out my dress clothes. They were still in a suitcase since our move last August. In there, I found all my skirts and clothes I used to wear when I had to look nice on a regular basis.
My Toekini's - Blue Rose on Black

These days, jeans and a tee shirt are the wardrobe of choice, so seeing all these dress clothes was like being in a time warp. I found a skirt I barely fit into, made a set of Toekini's to go with the outfit, and dressed up for the first time in many years.

I found a dress I had worn to my first prom in that suitcase too. I kept it because I love the style, it was pink with lace and puffy sleeves. Yes, it was the 80's, but I always loved that old fashioned style of the puffy sleeves, fitted waist, and skirt that flowed.
My wedding dress was the same style.
Me - in my puff ball dress
Fast forward a few days, and there we were digging through boxes of memorabilia in the basement, and found commemorative mugs and china from Prince Charles and Lady Diana's wedding.
Prince Charles and Lady Diana Commemorative Mug - 1981
It has been 30 years since that Royal Wedding.  Seeing the images from that fairytale wedding of the century, I realized it must have had an impact on me when I was 10 years old and watching it intently from our living room back in 1981.  I realized my dress was the same puff ball style as Princess Diana wore, though hers was a bit more ornate and worth a tad more than mine.
Fairytale Wedding of the Century
Here we are gearing up for another Royal Wedding, and I have to say I am little excited. In just over a week, Prince William and his beautiful bride Kate Middleton will be at the center of our attention for the Royal Wedding of this century. What will Kate's dress be like? I wonder if the girls who witness this event will unknowingly choose their wedding dress in the same style as Miss Kate years later.

Prince William & Kate Middleton
Will it be another fairytale wedding? Will it be as much of an event as his parents wedding was? Over 750 million people watched Prince Charles and Lady Diana get married on television, add to this those that listened on the radio and the number rose to over a billion.

Maybe it won't capture the world's attention like the one in 1981 did, but don't we all love a good fairytaleI know I will be trying to catch a glimpse of the Wedding of this Century.

Let's just hope this century's Royal Fairytale has a happy ending.

Music Monday! What it's Like

Great song suggested by hubby.

He thought in light of all the tornado's and terrible weather here in NC we should take a minute, or 4 (this song is just over 4 minutes) and think about those who were affected.

We were lucky, this time. Our basement had a little water seeping in and some of our collectibles got soaked, and some ruinedWe have been less lucky in the past, with our experience of a Cat.5 hurricane

So every time bad weather rears its ugly head, we take a moment and think about how thankful we are that we only lost our house and some material items. We all got through safe and soundand besides the photos and some other memorabilia we could not replace, we only lost 'stuff'Not our loved ones.

Others have not been so lucky.

This song, as Everlast says
"It’s about empathy. It’s saying, don’t judge… because you’ve got as much dirt under your fingernails."
And God forbid you ever have to wake up to the news
Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose...

Walking on Wednesdays - Mall Walking

My uncle introduced me to mall walking years ago. His form of mall walking was different than I ever thought of, being the typical 80's teen. Go to the mall to just....walk???

He needed a place where he could get his required exercise after a heart attack that was sheltered from those harsh Buffalo winters.

The mall was the perfect place, lots of space to walk in climate controlled environment. It was an added bonus that my uncle has very good taste in clothes and other items, and also he loved the thrill of a good deal. So he would walk daily, seeing the same stores day after day, and noticed when items went on sale

He then watched those items, and waited util they were discounted even more. When they were at their lowest, he walked right in and got some great items for a steal. Leather jackets, Farberware pan sets, you name it, if he got a great deal, he bought it.

Our trip to the mall yesterday, unfortunately, did not have those weeks of research behind them, but we still managed to get some good deals, and I walked and walked and walked. I even wore my walking sneakers.
What the boys picked out
Of course, we didn't set our course in the most efficient way. We chose our course strictly according to desire.  Victoria's Secret, American Eagle, Game Stop...you get the idea.  My daughter and I sent the boys on their own to pick out and try on their shorts and browse, while we went to our section and did our girl shopping.
What the girls picked out
Not the typical day of walking, I don't think I broke a sweat (well maybe while trying on shorts...why are they SO SHORT these days?).  But still, mall walking has it's benefits too. You get moving, you exercise your body, and mind, making decisions, hunting and gathering.  I think it is a nice way to add some variety to your exercise plan.
Just a fraction of what I have to finish!
Now, back to work to help pay for some of these great finds.

Walking on Wednesdays - Clearing my head and starting fresh

With the first of the Walking on Wednesday series
came a revelation.

Walking can clear the mind,
and allow for a fresh start.

It started out as a day with potential -
so much on the to-do list.
Listing new flowered Toekini's, making new ones,
finishing my inventory count
(so much inventory ~ I have so much to create!!)
Yellow Rose Toekini's ~ sold within 1 hour of listing!
Then, entering  shipping receipts from January until now,
entering sales into a new spreadsheet.
I am now an editor for zibbeter.com,
need to write an article for IndieSmiles.com,
on and on.
This was starting to stress me
Then I got notice the Toekini's I listed just sold!
Now to package, print shipping label, go to Post Office.
My list grew and grew

Quickly, it became clear
that I was becoming overwhelmed.
And, for me,
too much to do means
nothing gets done

So I abandoned everything,
got my loyal in house walking companion
and set off to just walk.
Walking Companion suddenly interested in birds
Walking started off with my mind racing,
organize workspace, then create, no then answer emails,
no, answer emails, promote shops for the Welcome Team Z group,
check Etsy Teams for upcoming shows,
NO - CREATE, then answer emails, oh, I don't know!

But then, I was out of breath ~ that hill was tough!
My mind was suddenly off my list.
Hey, what was that?
A big bird!
I too was suddenly interested in birds
like my walking companion.

And I noticed,
Bird nests were everywhere.
Or whatever this nest housed.
Bird Nest?
And this one, brilliantly built in our carport,
inside the hanging hose.
Bird Nest Cleverly Built
Purpose driven creativity.
To house new life, a fresh start.
Up close of Clever Bird Nest.
My head became clear.
My mind focused.
Take the cue from nature
and start fresh

Walking can clear the mind...
now...what can I make for dinner?
and I gotta get that purple rose toekini listed....
and I never answered that email....
